a Corresponding author address: Bart Geerts, NASA GSFC Code 912, Greenbelt, MD 20771, USA; email: [email protected] This brief paper illustrates some profiles of radar reflectivity in various precipitation systems observed during the 1998-99 Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) field campaigns. The profiles were collected by a nadir-viewing radar on the NASA ER-2, flying around 20 km altitude. This paper focuses on hurricane environments.

Classification and Characterization of Tropical Precipitation Based on High-Resolution Airborne Vertical Incidence Radar. Part I: Classification
Airborne measurements of vertical incidence radar reflectivity and radial velocity are analyzed for some 21 231 km of high-altitude flight tracks over tropical precipitation systems, in order to describe their characteristic vertical structure. The strength of the radar dataset lies in its superb vertical resolution, sufficient to detect unambiguously a bright band and the coincident Doppler ve...
متن کاملP3a.7 Classification and Characterization of Tropical Precipitation Based on High-resolution Airborne Vertical-incidence Radar
High-altitude airborne measurements of vertical incidence radar reflectivity and radial velocity are analyzed for some 21,231 km of flight tracks over tropical precipitation systems. The radar, the ER-2 Doppler radar (EDOP), was flown in three campaigns in central Florida, Brazil (near Ji Parana in the southeastern Amazon), and over hurricanes. The strength of the radar dataset lies in its supe...

modification of the radiative fluxes in the atmosphere and at the Earth’s surface; release and consumption of latent heat related to phase changes of water either directly inside the clouds or in precipitation generated in them; transport of heat, moisture, momentum and atmospheric trace constituents over large distances in the vertical in convectively generated clouds; modification of the surf...
متن کاملCorrection of Radar QPE Errors for Nonuniform VPRs in Mesoscale Convective Systems Using TRMM Observations
Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) contain both regions of convective and stratiform precipitation, and a bright band (BB) is often found in the stratiform region. Inflated reflectivity intensities in the BB often cause positive biases in radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). A vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) correction is necessary to reduce such biases. However, existing ...
متن کاملDiagnosis of the Warm Rain Process in Cloud-Resolving Models Using Joint CloudSat and MODIS Observations
This study examines the warm rain formation process in global and regional cloud-resolving models. Methodologies developed to analyze CloudSat and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite observations are employed to investigate the cloud-to-precipitation processes and are applied to model results for comparisons with corresponding statistics from the observations. Three ...
